Hacking Tumblr - Add Contact Me via Wufoo
Ok, sure, if you want to have people contact you could just type your email address or your EMAIL [AT] DOMAIN [DOT] COM into your Description section of your Tumblr settings and you’d be ready to go. But why make the reader go thru all that cutting and pasting? Wufoo.com is a terrific and easy to use HTML Form Generator which makes it perfect for creating a nice “contact me” form for your Tumblr page. Let’s get started…
- Create a Wufoo account - once you’ve created your Wufoo account, the next step is creating your contact form.
- Creating your contact form is really very easy but I can see why it may seem daunting with all the options Wufoo gives you. It’s actually really simple and Wufoo does a good job at streamlining it for you. The Wufoo editor allows you to add various HTML elements to your page and then customize the layout. You can even drag and drop, move items around, etc, etc. Don’t overthink this, because you can always go back and edit it.
Add the form elements you want the user to fill out. You should have at least a single-line text field for the user’s name, an email field (make it a required field), and a paragraph text field for the user’s message (make it a required field).
Before you’re done, make sure to edit the Form Properties and set the “Send a copy of new entries via Email” to the email address you want new entries to go to - probably your email address :) Otherwise, you’ll have to login to Wufoo to see who’s contacted you since they keep a record of everything users enter throughh the form you created.
If you’re looking for inspiration, here is an example of my “contact me” form. You can also view Wufoo’s examples page to see much more elaborate forms that you could build using Wufoo.
- Alright, you’re almost done. Once you’ve completed your form, and are happy with the results, go back to the Form Manager (you could just click on the “Forms” tab at the top of the page) and you should see your new form listed. Click on the “view” link. This will open up your form in your browser window. Copy the URL from your browser. You’re going to use this URL to add a link in your Tumblr account.
- Log back into Tumblr and select “Change Settings”.
- The easiest way to add a “contact me” form is to just link to it from your Description. Scroll down to the Description section and add whatever text you want to create the link - for example “contact me”. Now, select that text you just added and click the link icon in the editor. It will pop-up a window for you to enter the link to your contact form. Enter the contact form URL you just copied earlier in Step #3, and hit “insert”. Now scroll down to the bottom, and “Save Settings” and you’re done!
